About Me

I see you. I understand what chronic stress can feel like from the inside out.

Hi — I’m Cora McNeese Nelson, LMHC, and I provide therapy with an emphasis on helping people come back to solid ground when survival has become their normal.

I’ve been in this field for over a decade, and that experience has taught me something powerful:

People aren’t broken.
They are surviving.
And surviving doesn’t always feel steady.

That belief sits at the center of how I work.

How This Work Began

I’ve always known I wanted to help people heal.
Early in my career I worked with children in a statewide inpatient psychiatric program, learning not just to support young people at risk of losing placement — but to team with their families in understanding and navigating intense challenges.

From there, I transitioned into case management, helping families find and coordinate services. I saw firsthand how systems can feel overwhelming, and how much distress families carry quietly.

Eventually I began providing counseling — first in homes and schools, and later in outpatient and substance use treatment settings.

In those years I saw people struggle in cycles of shame, relapse, desperation, and exhaustion.

And I also saw something else:

People who thought they were broken weren’t.
They were adapting to survive.
But they weren’t taught how to thrive.

That realization changed the way I practice.

My Lived Experience Matters Too

I’m not only a clinician — I’m also:
  • a family member who has navigated the impact of substance use as well as the recovery process.
  • a mother of four children, two of whom are autistic and navigate the world in very different ways.
  • someone who faced life changing situations.

I have lived the overwhelm of:

• Coordinating multiple service systems
• Advocating for neurodiverse children
• Navigating school accommodations, therapy teams, and medical appointments
• Balancing family dynamics and emotional fatigue

I know what it’s like to feel responsible for everyone else and forget how to care for yourself.

And that lived experience informs how I sit with clients — especially caregivers, families, and people whose nervous systems live on alert.

My Philosophy of Care

Therapy with me isn’t about “fixing what’s wrong.”

It’s about:

• Understanding how your nervous system learned to survive
• Helping you reclaim the voice you stopped trusting
• Building coping tools that support regulation, not just reaction
• Setting boundaries that honor your energy
• Improving communication without escalation
• Helping you stand on steady ground — regardless of your circumstances

You are not broken.
You were surviving.
And survival doesn’t reflect who you are meant to be.

Where I’ve Been + What I’ve Learned

Professionally, I’ve:

• Worked with children, adults, families, and groups in a variety of settings
• Provided case management and advocacy for families in complex systems
• Worked in outpatient and intensive outpatient substance use treatment programs
• Built and led clinical programs, including services for individuals in recovery and outreach for underserved populations

These experiences taught me that healing isn’t linear — but it is possible, especially when we work together with patience, honesty, and grounded intention.

A Little About How I Work

I approach therapy through a relational and nervous-system–aware lens. That means:

  • We focus on what your body feels as much as what your mind thinks

  • We recognize survival adaptations — and help build steadier responses

  • I meet you where you are, and help you move toward what you want instead of what you fear

You are the expert on your experience.
I’m here to help you translate that experience into clarity, stability, and choice.

When You’re Ready

If you’re ready to stop living in reaction and start living with intention,
I invite you to schedule a consultation.

You don’t have to have all the answers.
You just have to be willing to start.

I’ll meet you there.
