Blue Dragon Dojo is currently in development as I finalize the curriculum and complete the final steps before opening the inaugural therapeutic martial arts groups. If you'd like to be among the first to hear when enrollment opens, join the Interest List.
Blue Dragon Dojo is a therapist-led outpatient psychotherapy group that uses authentic martial arts as part of evidence-informed mental health treatment. Participants learn martial arts skills while working toward individualized therapeutic goals such as emotional regulation, confidence, resilience, communication, executive functioning, and healthy relationships.
Is Blue Dragon Dojo therapy or martial arts?
Both—but not in the way people usually think.
Blue Dragon Dojo is licensed outpatient psychotherapy that intentionally integrates authentic martial arts into treatment.
Martial arts provides the experiences. Psychotherapy provides the clinical framework that helps participants learn from those experiences and apply new skills in everyday life.
Is this a traditional martial arts school?
No.
Although participants learn authentic martial arts techniques, Blue Dragon Dojo is not primarily a martial arts school or recreational program.
Every activity is selected because it supports a therapeutic goal. Mental and emotional well-being—not athletic performance—is always the primary focus.
Do participants earn belts?
Yes—participants who wish to pursue belt advancement may have opportunities to do so as they develop their skills.
However, earning belts is never required to benefit from the therapeutic program. Progress is measured by personal growth, emotional development, and movement toward individualized treatment goals rather than rank alone.
Can participants compete in tournaments?
Some participants may have opportunities to participate in tournaments or other martial arts events if they choose and if it supports their goals. Participation is always optional and is never required for therapeutic progress.
Who can participate?
Blue Dragon Dojo is designed for:
Children (approximately age 6 and older)
Adolescents
Clinically appropriate adults
Every participant completes a clinical assessment before joining to determine whether the program is a good therapeutic fit.
What concerns can Blue Dragon Dojo help address?
Blue Dragon Dojo may benefit individuals experiencing:
Anxiety
Emotional regulation difficulties
Anger
Trauma-related concerns
ADHD
Autism Spectrum characteristics
Low confidence
Executive functioning challenges
Stress
Difficulty with healthy boundaries
Social and communication challenges
Treatment is always individualized.
Does my child need a mental health diagnosis?
Not necessarily.
Some participants have formal diagnoses, while others simply experience challenges with emotional regulation, confidence, communication, or coping. Clinical appropriateness is determined during the assessment process—not by diagnosis alone.
Can Blue Dragon Dojo replace individual therapy?
Sometimes.
For some participants, Blue Dragon Dojo may serve as the primary treatment approach. For others, it works best alongside individual therapy. Recommendations are based on each participant's unique needs and treatment goals.
My child already sees a therapist. Can they still participate?
Possibly.
Blue Dragon Dojo can often complement therapy provided by another clinician when coordination is appropriate and clinically beneficial. This can be discussed during the consultation process.
Does my child need martial arts experience?
No.
No previous martial arts experience is required. Participants begin where they are and learn at a pace that matches their developmental and therapeutic needs.
My child isn't athletic. Is that okay?
Absolutely.
Blue Dragon Dojo is not designed for athletes.
Activities are adapted to support therapeutic growth, not athletic performance. Many participants join because they are looking for a different way to learn emotional and coping skills.
Is this appropriate for children with ADHD?
Many children with ADHD benefit from structured movement, predictable routines, and experiential learning.
Blue Dragon Dojo incorporates these elements while helping participants strengthen attention, impulse control, emotional regulation, confidence, and executive functioning. Whether it is the right fit depends on each child's individual needs.
Is this appropriate for Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Many individuals with Autism Spectrum characteristics appreciate the structured, predictable nature of martial arts. The assessment process helps determine whether the program is clinically appropriate based on each person's strengths, needs, and goals.
What happens during a typical session?
Although every group is different, sessions often include:
Authentic martial arts instruction
Movement-based therapeutic activities
Partner exercises
Communication practice
Emotional regulation coaching
Reflection and therapeutic processing
Skill integration for home, school, work, and relationships
Every activity supports a therapeutic objective.
How is progress measured?
Progress is measured by changes that occur outside the dojo as well as within it. Examples include:
Improved emotional regulation
Greater confidence
Better communication
Increased resilience
Healthier relationships
Stronger boundaries
Improved attention and focus
Greater ability to cope with stress
How do I get started?
Every participant begins with:
Free consultation
Clinical assessment
Individualized treatment plan
Placement into an appropriate therapeutic group
This process helps ensure Blue Dragon Dojo is the right fit before treatment begins.
Is Blue Dragon Dojo covered by insurance?
Blue Dragon Dojo is a private-pay outpatient psychotherapy service. If you have questions about payment or out-of-network reimbursement, those can be discussed during your consultation.
